Anzac Day – lest we forget

Anzac Day – lest we forget

This year Anzac is falling a week after Easter and right in the middle of the School Holidays.  With this in mind it would be very easy to just incorporate it into another day’s holiday and forget that it is a day we remember our fighting heroes of yesteryear!
Anzac day ceremonies in our larger cities are often televised, but what can be interesting are the memorials in our smaller towns.   As Host Accommodation has accommodation throughout many smaller towns in NZ, this week we thought it would be a fitting tribute to showcase some of the memorial parks, and monuments from our Host towns.
Te Awamutu

Has the Te Awamutu War Memorial Park – this park is the largest and most popular park in town, built around the Mangahoe Stream, the park includes a duck pond, fountain, paved walkways and plenty of open spaces for events and picnics.  The park features a special sunken cross as its memorial feature.  If staying at Rosetown Motel is sure to take some time for a wander.

Dannevirke

Dannevirke War Memorial  was unveiled on Anzac Day 1924 and has been a key feature of the Dannevirke Domain ever since.   Dannevirke is a small rural town that is steeped in NZ history.  When staying at Viking Lodge Motel – take some time to explore this quintessential NZ town.

Motueka

Motueka Memorial Park and sports ground covers over 4.9 hectares in the heart of Motueka.  The memorial is surrounded by very well established trees.  Equestrian Lodge Motel is the perfect place to unwind for a few days, and explore the region and head off to the park for some reflective time.

Hokitika

One of our more unusual but equally special memorials would be  the Hokitika Beachfront Seat Memorial.  What an ideal way to sit and contemplate.  252 Beachside Motels in Hokitika will be able to direct you to this location and other memorials around the region.

What ever you do this Anzac Day keep an eye out for one of the many memorials located throughout NZ.  What they represent is not forgotten!
